DJI Phantom 4 Quadcopter

NICAI Technical team leader Zane Egginton testing out the Faculties recent purchase: a DJI Phantom 4 Quadcopter.

The Phantom 4 is the latest iteration of the DJI Phantom series and features impressive additions such as automated flight control, object detection and a collision avoidance system. The camera shoots DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) video at 24/25 fps and UHD 4K (3480 x 2160) at up to 30 fps while also being able to take photos at 12MP with single shot, HDR, burst, and time-lapse modes.

We could probably list the features for hours but the main thing is WE WANT TO USE IT!

At this stage we are looking for projects that require aerial photography/video to be used for mapping and modelling or just documenting a site. To note, these drones are treated by the CAA as an aircraft and are subject to strict rules. The big ones are that you can’t fly; higher the 400ft (120m) above ground, within 4km of an airport, above people or private property without permission, and flights must not be flown between Sunset and Sunrise (i.e. no night flights). Unfortunately a large portion of Auckland airspace is military controlled due to Whanuapai, more information can be found at Airshare http://www.airshare.co.nz/ including a map of restricted areas.

At this stage all flights will be flown by appointment only. If you have any projects that you’d like to talk about please contact Zane Egginton (z.egginton@auckland.ac.nz) or get in contact Ricky Wong in OML (r.wong@auckland.ac.nz).

Excited to see how students use this new equipment!
